Description

The Diyala weir is located at (7) kilometers south of Hemren Dam in Diyala Governorate, across Diyala River, it was constructed as a replacement to an old weir at the same location. it is one of the main structures of Diyala scheme, controlling the Diyala water levels and divert water into Khalis Regulator located on the right abutment and the combined head reach regulator located on the left abutment which distributes water to other canals for different irrigation projects. Original Diyala Weir was constructed in 1928 then it was reconstructed between 1939-1940 then in 1964 it was constructed fully as gated weir including sediments control flushing regulator on each side in addition to combined head reach and Khalis Main Canal Head regulators it is 400 m long includes 23 vertical lift steel gates each 12x2m with a total discharge of 1200 m3/sec .The design upstream water level (Pond Level ) is 67.50 masl .The project was commissioned in 1969.

Needs

Detailed Inspection and Evaluation for all the Structures by qualified consultants is required, this includes, in order defining the required maintenance and /or replacement and improvement works. A qualified consultant must be employed to prepare the required monitoring instrumentation and Piezometers needed at each structure, and preparation of New Operation and Maintenance Manual. A new bathymetry survey is required for the river reaches upstream and downstream the barrage to evaluate the sediment accumulation within the upstream reach and the scour if any within the downstream reach, this will define the required dredging , cleaning and/ or adding new and/or maintaining the protection works.

Objective

The Diyala weir is considered the only water control scheme within Diyala Governorate it was constructed for the following purposes: (1) Flood Control of Diyala River, by diverting excess flood waves via the side escape weir and channel to Shwaija depre
