Description

The Dibis Barrage is located at (8) kilometers south of Altun Kupri town , 3 kilometers north to Dibis thermal power station , and at about 35 kilometers north of Kirkuk City in Kirkuk Governorate, across the Lesser Zab River. The project consists of a 50 m long concrete gated part and a 112 m long earth embankment dam part. The gated part includes 8 openings equipped with electrically operated Radial Gates each 11×8 m capable of discharging 4300 m3/sec at a pond level of 254 masl , the extreme discharge can be 8400 m3/sec through the gate and emergency fuse plug .It is one of the main structures, controlling the Lesser Zab water levels and discharges necessary to divert water into Kirkuk Irrigation Project Main Canal. The dam construction was completed in 1956 and commissioned in 1957 .

Needs

Qualified consultants must be employed to prepare the required monitoring instrumentation and Piezometers to be installed at each structure, and to prepare a New Operation and Maintenance Manual. Detailed Bathymetry survey is required, and a detailed study for the sedimentation problem at the upstream side is urgent, river training works are needed to be designed and implemented along with intense dredging operations needs to be programmed to improve the flow conditions at the upstream side of the dam.

Objective

The scheme was constructed for the control of water levels at lesser Zab river , and to divert Irrigation Water with a maximum discharge of 278 m3/sec to Irrigate the Kirkuk Udhaim Irrigation Project via the Head Regulator and Kirkuk Main Irrigati
