Description
Fallujah barrage is located of the Euphrates River at about 5 Km south of the city of Falujah to control the gravity flow into AL-Sqlawiyeh and the combined channel which supplies irrigation water to Abu Ghurayb , Radwaniyah, Youssifiyah, Latifiyah and Alexandria projects main canals. The barrage is a concrete structure composed of the ten openings controlled by radial gates each 16mx8.5 m able to pass a total discharge of 3600 m3/s, and the max pond level upstream the4 barrage is 44.79 masl. The structure includes a Fish pass 144.90 m long and 8 m wide, The Barrage navigation facility is specially designed to operate as ships lift. The combined channel head regulator is located at the end of the sedimentation basin consists of 4 radial gates each 6 m wide x 3.50 m high , with a total discharge of 104 m3/s for water level of 42.5 masl The main regulator is located adjacent to the barrage, discharge the water to the sedimentation basin upstream the combined channel head regulator , includes 4 radial gates each 6 m wide and 7.5 m high discharging a maximum flow of 104 m3/s into the sedimentation basin, the combined channel conveys the water to the main canals of Abu Ghraib, Radwaniyah, Youssifiyah, Latifiyah and Alexandria, the construction is started in 1978 and completed in 1985 the scheme was commissioned late in 1985.
Needs
Qualified consultants must be employed to prepare the required monitoring instrumentation and Piezometers to be installed at each structure, and preparation of New Operation and Maintenance Manual. After commissioning, the ground water table is raised within Falujah Town, which affected all underground constructions and infra structures within the city. A ground water control system was constructed for some parts of the city, but all now is not operative. the situation in the city needs to be monitored and evaluated and a complete peripheral drainage system and pumping stations needs to be designed and constructed to control the ground water table within the city. A new bathymetry survey is required for the river reaches upstream and downstream the barrage to evaluate the sediment accumulation within the upstream reach and the scour if any within the downstream reach, this will define the required dredging , cleaning and/ or protection works. The realignment of the Euphrates River in the reach of Faluja barrage has resulted in an area of significant sediment deposition approximately 700 m upstream of the barrage. Flow conditions are causing scour of material 700 m (right side) upstream of the barrage and depositing of sediment on the left side. The sediment is persistent and significant enough that it has formed an island complete with riparian needs. The volume of sediment upstream the barrage is 3,000,000 m3.
Objective
The scheme was constructed to control the flow and water levels in Euphrates river and diverting part of Euphrates River water by gravity for irrigation via the combined channel which distributes the water to the projects main canals of Abu Ghurayb , Radw
