Description
The dam is located in Anbar Governorate on Euphrates River, 7 Km North of Haditha Town, 140 km from the Syrian borders and at 250 km upstream of Baghdad. The dam is an embankment dam , 9.5 km long with maximum Height of 54 m , the dam was built using dolomite central core including an impervious central asphaltic diaphragm and a mixture of sand and gravel upstream and downstream shells with concrete upstream protection and rocks riprap downstream protection . the central core is founded on a grout curtain provided to control seepage and uplift pressure . the site Investigations and design were prepared by the Russian Survey and design Institute “HYDROPROJECT “ in 1978 . The dam was completed and Commissioned in 1985.
Needs
Abnormal incidents were observed in the dam from its first commissioning, they are wet area, increase of water level in some Piezometers at the d/s side of the dam, and they are even higher than the water levels of u/s side on the same alignment. Therefore Detailed inspection of evaluation of the status and problems by a qualified panel of experts is needed. Since the dam and appurtenant structures are not evaluated for long time, overall evaluation needs to be carried out either by specialized consultant or by a panel of experts.

The dam was constructed as a multipurpose project for the following Objectives: Flood Control of Euphrates River to a certain extents. Storage Of Water for downstream Irrigation demands and other uses. Electric Power Generation. Development of Tourist facilities and Fisheries
