Description

The Dam is located in Diyala Governorate, constructed on Diyala river 10 km upstream of Diyala weir, 120 km north east of Baghdad Downstream Derbendikhan dam. It is an embankment dam with central inclined clay core, 3500 m long with maximum height 53 m with crest at Elev . 109.50 masl , the dam includes a central clay core and U/S and D/S filters , the upstream slope is covered by precast concrete blocks to protect the dam from waves action from the reservoir side and D/S slopes covered by coarse gravel to protect the slope from erosion caused by rain water. The Earth fill quantities was about 3 560 000 cum 73% clayey materials and 27% the upstream and downstream covers, in addition 110 000 cum precast concrete blocks were placed at the upstream slope . the dam construction is started in 1976 and completed and commissioned in 1981.

Nothing is needed apart from the routine annual maintenance and the continues observation of the monitoring instrumentations

Objective

Hemren dam is one of the strategic projects within Diyala river Basin, it was found necessary to control river’s floods. The dam was constructed for the following objectives Control of Diyala river floods from 14000cum/s to 4000 cum/s. Storage of water for irrigation of 300 000 ha within Diyala basin downstream the dam. Electrical power generation of 215 KW/hr. Development of tourists projects. Development of aquatic life ( fisheries .. etc )
