Kufa

Description

The Kufa barrage is located on, Kufa Branch of the Euphrates River upstream the town of Kufa within Najaf Governorate, to serve part of Kifil Shanafiya Irrigation Project which is not constructed yet. It is now providing the irrigation water to all cultivated areas located upstream the barrage. The barrage is a modern concrete structure; it is composed of 7 openings controlled by radial gates each 12 m X 6.30 m able to pass a total discharge of 1400 m3/s, the max pond level upstream the barrage is 25.70 masl. The scheme includes a navigation lock 150 m long and 20 m wide. And a fish ladder to facilitate the fish migration across the barrage. On the right side a hydropower station was constructed, includes 4 bulb turbines, with total generation capacity of 6 MW, The scheme was completed and commissioned at the end of 1988

Needs

Qualified consultants must be employed to prepare the required monitoring instrumentation and Piezometers to be installed at each structure, and preparation of New Operation and Maintenance Manual. A new bathymetry survey is required for the river reaches upstream and downstream the barrage to evaluate the sediment accumulation within the upstream reach and the scour if any within the downstream reach , this will define the required dredging, cleaning and/ or protection works.

Objective

The scheme was constructed to control the flow and water levels in Kufa Branch of Euphrates River and diverting and regulating part the River water by gravity for irrigation for the cultivation areas located on both sides of the river upstream the Barrage
